Page 1 of 14 Autobiography Cont. Loskiel On returning home I resumed with fresh zest my onerous duties in the Printing-office, as Overseer and Reader. Not contented with these, I undertook the editing of a new edition of Loskiel’s History of the Mission among the North American Indians. It had been originally published in German, then translated into English, and was now out of print. This was more than a new edition, for the original had ended with the year 1787, and I continued the History to 1838, besides adding much additional information and copious notes to the old narrative; considerably expanding, also, the "Preliminary Account of the Indians." This involved much laborious research, and occupied many of my leisure hours; or rather many hours which I ought to have devoted to sleep. But I cannot say that I ever suffered by curtailing the hours of sleep. It appears to me that when mind and body are fatigued by labour, sleep follows closely on rest, —it is sounder and more satisfying; therefore less of it is required for refreshment and renovation.
