For historians there is a section devoted to Gateshead covering its history, a description of the area, St Mary's Church, and the author gives a detailed history of St Edmunds hospital built in 1248 and he covers other religions that had started to take hold in Gateshead at the time of writing.  The author also writes about charitable institutions in Gateshead in the early 19th century.  The main part of the book gives an account of the history of Newcastle.
