Editors Review

At last, an Historian who attempts to write an impartial history!  When it comes to history most of us have an ideological perception, even if we do not recognise it in ourselves and our sources are not usually primary but secondary, therefore can we judge these sources as impartial?  It cost two guineas in 1851, a very expensive book indeed.

The book has a list of the Mayors and Sheriffs of Newcastle (page 599) and linked content pages starting at page 611.  The author briefly covers specific areas, for example the Church of St John in Newcastle is described as an ancient Church, but there are no details of its history further back than the 18th century.

The biggest section of the book concerns itself with trade and manufacturers and occupations, for those interested in economic history of the City then this is for you.

There is the standard list of subscribers in the front pages but unfortunately, they are listed either by occupation or location, so linkage to an ancestor is quite difficult.  In conclusion a book more for the economic historian than the social, but worth a look and it is searchable by the search button on the right.
