The Durham Record is one of those links buried in a council website that turns out to be a hidden gem for the Local and Family historian.  The new Durham Record aims to provide access to all the heritage related images that are currently part of a number of different websites. Hopefully this makes it easier to start to search and may well lead people into other websites for related resources.

You can search by keyword, by person and by place.  If you search by place you will discover that some of the place names may not be located in the North East. For example - clicking on the link Salisbury plain we come across a well preserved photograph of a group of Durham Light Infantry soldiers in a informal group.  Unfortunately there are no names to the photo, but there is information regarding the group.  If you search by name James Wallace will produce a photograph of Seaham library and the librarians including Mr Wallace. There is also a link to the Keys of the Past a website funded by the National Lottery which unlocks the archaeological secrets of County Durham and Northumberland.
