Findmypast.com, in partnership with the Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS), http://www.ffhs.org.uk/ has added new memorial inscriptions to its Parish Records Collection for the County of Northumberland. These records are the fruits of decades of transcription by members of the Northumberland & Durham Family History Society. Volunteers from the NDFHS have been visiting graveyards and cemeteries in Northumberland for over thirty years, uncovering buried headstones, and patiently deciphering weathered inscriptions. Older members remember the days of organised parties, visiting graveyards in rural Northumberland and having an enjoyable day out. The result of these efforts is that the society has a large database of Monumental Inscriptions for Northumberland. In many cases the Monumental Inscription is the only record left as many have weathered or being destroyed. The records contain inscriptions from the 1600s to the twentieth century and will appear as part of the results when you search for a burial within the Parish Records Collection of Find My Past. Some contain basic information such as parish and date of death, whereas others may contain much more, depending on what was written on the headstone, and what of the inscription has survived the ravages of time. Pricing for inscriptions is six, eight or 12 credits, depending on the amount of detail they contain. The society produces booklets for MI which have on their front cover the Parish Church. These can be ordered directly from the NDFHS website www.ndfhs.org.uk For members of The Northumberland and Durham Family History Society they will provide a research service for members at £4 a search. You can download a Research Request form from their website at www.ndfhs.org
