"The Ingenious Mr Avison"

Making Music and Money in Eighteenth Century Newcastle

By Roz Southey, Margaret Madison, David Hughes

Editors Review

The Ingenious Mr Avison tells a story not just about music, but explores a world of fashionable concerts (ladies half price, hoop skirts discouraged), money, wigs, waistcoats, dancing and love affairs.  Newcastle was a lively place in the 18th century, as the industrial revolution brought a disposable income to Geordies who, as they do today, liked to be well entertained.  To those who think Newcastle must have been a grimy place and social life in Newcastle was at best the local tavern then this is a book that you should read.

The book is illustrated with a full colour section.  Published in association with the Avison Ensemble, The Ingenious Mr Avison is published in February 2009 at a cost of £10.

Tyne Bridge Publishing is part of Newcastle Library service.  Its role is to publish books of local interest at affordable prices to those interested in the history of Newcastle and Tyneside in General.  The books can be purchased at the libraries in Newcastle or on-line.
