Revival in the North East of England

A website author: Andy Williamson

According to Andy Williamson "The North East of England is an area where God has moved powerfully over the years.  Mr Williamson has a section of his website on the development of religion within the region particularly through what he calls "Spiritual Revivals":  that have swept this region  and to which my 4x Geat Grandfather bore witness as he attended a meeting where the speaker was John Wesley the founder of the Methodist movement.

Mr Williamson website includes   William Patterson work on "NORTHERN PRIMITIVE METHODISM" published in 1909.  Patterson’s research is not a broad generalisation of events,  he went into in depth research, uncovering events and more importantly the names attached to the events and for the reader especially those interested in Family History, his work may  include the names of your Methodist ancestors that founded Primitive Methodist Chapels.   Since Primitive Methodism structure was bottom up rather than top down as in the Anglican Church there were considerable more people involved in the running of the Primitive Methodist Chapel in the Victorian period.  Hopefully you may find an ancestor in the book.

Mr Williamson has a number of links to the following articles or books from his website, these include the following:

  • John Wesley's accounts from his journal of his ministry in the North-East of England
  • The Ministry Of James Caughey In Sunderland And Gateshead In The 1840s
  • William Booth and Revival on Tyneside
  • The Beginning of the Pentecostal Movement in Sunderland in 1907
  • Extracts from North East newspapers on Salvation Army Revival Meetings
