Editors Review

This is a historical work and the Chapters are in chronological order, and reads like a standard history text-book.  You have the feel of Berwick being a frontier town, for example the writer states "when the troops deserted the town during the Jacobite rebellion and the townsfolk were in a panic fearing the wild Highlanders”.  The author includes a descriptive account of Berwick made by a French traveller in 1762, from which he observes how the gates of the town were shut during Church services.  Chapter 15 looks at the economy in Berwick, while 19 covers the surrounding areas including Holy Island, Norham, Islandshire and other locations near Berwick on the English side of the border.  There is more historical detail than Fullers work, especially the Border History.  The book is easily searchable and full of interesting facts not just of Berwick but of Anglo/Scottish relations over the centuries.
